The heart of Basque country is Gernika (or Guernica). The spiritual home, where meetings of the Nation’s leadership were traditionally held beneath an ancient tree, was made famous as the target for the first mass civilian terror air bombing by Franco’s forces in the civil war. Brought to common consciousness by Picasso’s quirky painting, the town now hosts a really moving peace museum. Well worth a visit. Then it’s off to the ferry and a choppy trip across the Bay of Biscay. Severe Storm Force winds, but beats an 800 miles drive. Tucked up in our own bed less than 30 hours after leaving Spain. |
