We were greatly honoured to be invited along to the Pinnacle Club Centenary dinner at the Vic in Llanberis (actually 102 years due to Covid). As well as the long-established relationship between the Rucksack and Pinnacle Clubs, cemented through our joint Gogarth meets, Helen had been roped in to run a couple of her now-famous “Yoga for Climbers” sessions, and I was on roady duties. “I’m with The Band”. 🙂
Proceedings kicked off with a well-attended Yoga warm-up

Saturday was autumnal, and the slate was the obvious venue (especially as I was only just off the plane from Utah and suffering with a dodgy back). Great to catch up with Alison and Andy, and their suggestion of Never Never Land was ideal for its sunny orientation, sheltered from the wind.

We were also joined by President Alex along with Ricky and Paul.

After 4 routes there was just time for a quick gander into the abyss of Twll Mawr…

… before heading back to the hotel for afternoon tea and cake, and a series of three films capturing different aspects of the first hundred years of the Pinnies – all really enjoyable, and very successful in capturing the unique ethos and tradition of this very special club. Journey to Jagdula was my favourite, tracing the adventures of six young women setting out on the first ascent of a 6,000m peak in Nepal in 1962. An impressive achievement now, but truly staggering in the context of the prevailing attitudes and norms of the time. There’s more about the centenary here and trailers for a couple of the films:
Dinner was a convivial affair and also highlighted another remarkable tradition of the club – each guest receives a menu card with an individually painted picture! There was a display of such menus from over the years, including this one featuring an instantly recognisable picture from our much-missed friend Sally Kier.

More Yoga on Sunday before trundling home through more autumnal weather. A great weekend in fine company and best wishes for the next 100 years!
