There’s quite a concentration of crags around Chattanooga, and we only have time to sample one of them, so we chose Foster Falls following recommendations from a bunch of Tennessee locals we’ve bumped into over the last few weeks. This turned out to be great advice. The crag runs along the Creek beneath the eponymous Falls in a State Park which surrounds this beautiful spot.
The climbing is on Sandstone, of course, about 20m to 30m high, and mostly near-vertical, with the occasional roof thrown in. The huge pockets and slots of The Red and Obed are soon forgotten and instead crimpy holds and side pulls are the name of the game. Our fingers were trashed by the end of the day.
Time to head back for an evening round the fire at the idyllic Marion County Park.
