Ardmair – Big Roof Buttress

Another visit to this handy and impressive crag, which we’d enjoyed a few years ago

Ardmair Crags

This time we made the longer walk to Big Roof Buttress – I wonder why they call it that…?

Not a bad outlook either

There’s a 3* E1 5a on the Side Wall – Acrimonious Acrobat gets the grade for its sustained climbing rather than boldness.

Round on the Front Face we did a short, tough VS, Terrace Crack, before the main event tackling one of the routes around the roof.

The actual roof itself is taken by the impressive Burning Desire, E5 6b, which looked a tad too burly for me! That left the two 3* E2s that flank it – I’d flipped a mental coin and chosen the left one: Skeletons, but a pair of locals recommended the right hand line as “Fu@#ing Awesome, Man” so I switched plan to the appropriately named Space Monkey. The meat of this is a massively overhanging V-groove, which looks like a horrendous thrutch but thankfully also succumbs to a more subtle approach!

Time was moving on…

and we were due at our freebie stopover at the nearby Morefield Motel. No obligation to frequent the bar or restaurant but it seemed rude not to, so we booked a table for dinner. Then realised we’d planted ourselves in the middle of the England Scotland game of Euro 2020. Fortunately, you can always rely on England to turn in a turgid no-score bore draw, when you are trying to be discreet! It did kick off at full time, but only in a bagpipes and Highland Fling kind of way. Recommended!
