Justin and Chris invited us to break our journey to Scotland with an afternoon in Borrowdale. With the temperature around 30C we needed a shady crag that wasn’t at the top of a lung-busting hill. Luckily we were in the safe hands of the local guidebook author – Justin had the answer: Steel Knotts Crag.
A 20 minute mostly level walk from Grange brings this little gem into sight, with the east wall already in shade (how often do you find the words “seeking shade” and “Lake District” in the same sentence? Bonkers weather!)
Stunning views over Borrowdale too!
We start with the excellent 3* HVS, The Lost Boys, which takes a rising line to join the arete of the crag before an interesting couple of pulls sees you in a fantastic situation.
More good climbing brings you to the top and a handy rap point (60m single just gets you down, though it’s probably as fast to walk!)
Next up, a fun VS, Ambling Ant, which is well worth doing, followed by the outstanding Meandering Maggot, E1, which has quite a bit of climbing on it including an airy final 10ft up a sharp arete (topping out in a rather spiky juniper bush!)
Back to our hosts’ splendid country retreat for beer and a barbie – what a gorgeous spot, surrounded by nature with views over Skiddaw and the surrounding fells. Hard to beat The Lakes in weather like this!
Thanks for the guided tour and the brilliant hospitality!
