This impressive gorge runs along the eastern edge of the Picos d’Europa, from Panes down to Potes – a charming touristy village. We’ve based ourselves at a fab campsite just out of town – La Viola, with great views of the Picos.
The windy road up the gorge provides access to half a dozen crags along its length. The forecast wasn’t great so we started with a day at Urdon – a handy choice being very near the road and with plenty of overhanging rock offering a few perma-dry routes. Sure enough we were greeted with a light drizzle on our arrival, and were starting to believe all the worst warnings of Picos weather. A couple of excellent routes, sheltered beneath capping roofs, cheered us up and then the sun came out anyway.
