With our imminent arrival in Calpe we have a morning ring round of campsites, with growing concern as the first two ‘have some space starting in early March’… Fortunately, we’re more lucky with our final option, camping Merced, who can squeeze us in. We decided to head down to baggsy the spot rather than stop to climb on the way and risk it.
Settled into our new home for a week or so, we have an afternoon to fill before a 6pm rendezvous at the Bar Arenal. Just time for the short drive to Toix West and an easy multi-pitch outing. Fine therapy for Helen’s finger rehab.
The bar is overflowing with ‘snowbirding’ climbers – about 30 who’ve mostly been enjoying the sunshine over Christmas and New Year, with a few recent arrivals like ourselves. Plenty of familiar faces to catch up with – with news of recently developed crags in the area. We come away armed with a tick list for the week!
