Back in Blighty and at least “the beast from the East” has headed back. In fact, Thursday is positively spring like, and even though we’re only just off the boat it seems rude not to take advantage and grab a few routes before the next downpour arrives.
Stoney’s Garage Buttress might not be Margalef, but it’s half an hour from home and a couple of minutes from the car – ideal for a quick fix. Whilst the rock quality isn’t always the best, the actual climbing is pretty good and you get good use of an 80m rope on a few of the routes.
We did Onwards and Upwards, 4,000, Dreamcatcher and Gulp & Go – about 400ft of 6b+ and a good workout.
Friday wasn’t quite so toasty, but Jim was keen, so we decided on an early season trad taster – and there’s nowhere better than Lawrencefield, especially when there’s a chill wind blowing.
We did Three Tree Climb, Great Harry and Great Peter (the latter two being a little more testing than usual with a fair bit of dampness.
Then a change of angle to take in Gingerbread, Meringue and Vanilla Slice (sound like Android updates) by which time things had warmed up considerably.
Good to get a couple of E1s under the belt and remind myself what those fiddly bits of metal are for!
